Bill Unger

It is with great sorrow that the North American Society of Pipe Collectors announces the passing of its longtime Secretary/treasurer Bill Unger. Bill passed away quietly on January 1, 2013 from complications of Leukemia.

Many people remember Bill as the gray haired aging hippie manning the microphone through out a NASPC show calling out the names of Raffle winners. Others will remember him as the somewhat curmudgeonly guy at the NASPC table at other shows or in Pipe shops forever extolling the virtues of being a member of NASPC. But most of us will remember him as the friendly gracious pipe smoker who was always willing to chat about most any subject.

However, Bill was much, much more. Coming to Columbus from Illinois in 1960, Bill attended Ohio State on a football scholarship. Though sidelined by a knee injury early in his career, Bill retained his scholarship, and did see some action under the legendary Woody Hayes. He received his BA, and MA in English from Ohio State, and became a lecturer in English at Ohio State. He then returned to the Chicago area, where he worked for Encyclopaedia Brittanica and met his lovely future wife Pam.

Bill and Pam then returned to Columbus to pursue their respective doctorates. Always the quintessential hippie, he loved his folk music, especially Bob Dylan, and got great joy in talking tunes to those who’d listen.

An accomplished author and editor, Bill operated the Acme Writing Company in Columbus for many years. He wrote the book As Individual as a Thumbprint: The Custom-Bilt Pipe Story. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Pam, dog, Stanley, and more friends than can ever be imagined.

Rest well Bill, and give our regards to Tracy Mincer.

The North American Society of Pipe Collectors was founded after a long evening spent over a pot of good coffee and more than a bowl or two of good tobacco.  Phil Bradford and Regis McCafferty decided that a club was needed in Ohio to promote pipe smoking, information sharing, knowledge of tobaccos, and fellowship with other pipe smokers.  The club would share information via a newsletter, be open to all, and hold at least one show each year.  The club was founded in 1994 as the Ohio Pipe Collectors. In March of 1997, the club had grown to include members from 28 states and Canada, and the Board decided that a new name more appropriately reflecting the scope of the membership was called for.  The name was changed to the North American Society of Pipe Collectors. NASPC continues today, working to promote pipe smoking, sharing of information, and fellowship.

.THE 2013 NASPC PIPE
Scott Thile • Straight Bulldog
It's the season that I announce the NASPC pipe for the year. Again, I could not be more pleased to make the announcement for all our anxious NASPC members. The 2013 edition will be made for us by Scott Thile. S. E. Thile (Scott) has enjoyed pipe smoking and collecting since he was 16 and has loved wood and working wood for as long as he can remember. His woodworking skills have been honed over many years as a piano tuner technician and rebuilder of vintage pianos, plus restoring and maintaining string instruments.

For many years, Scott dreamed of making his own pipe, and, in February of 2006, he finally did. It was christened as Etude #1, The Piano Tuner's Pipe, and he was hooked! Since that first pipe, Scott has dedicated nearly every spare moment to pipe making and to studying the work of the masters. More details on Scott and his pipes may be found at his website: http://www.sethilepipes.com/.

The pipe will be a black sandblast "canted" straight bulldog with a tapered diamond-shaped stem. Approximate dimensions are length, 6.20"/157mm; height, 2.16"/55mm; diameter, 1.99"/51mm; inside diameter, .87"/22mm; chamber depth, 1.65"/42mm; weight, 2.15 oz/62 grams. All of Scott's regular nomenclature will be on the pipes, plus the year 2013 and a NASPC stamp. These pipes will all be hand made, and there will be some variance among them. As always, only the number of pipes ordered and paid for ahead of time will be made. We have set an upper limit on the total number to be made at 30 pipes. If more than that are ordered, and if Scott is able to accommodate more, this number may be increased. But, at this time, we do not know if that will be possible.

The price will be $295, including shipping, and the pipes will only be available to NASPC members. They will be available to order until Friday, January 12, 2013, unless the maximum number is reached before that. We expect to send them out to members around the first week of April, 2013. Scott will at our August NASPC show, along with a prototype that may be viewed in person. It will be a great addition to the NASPC pipes.

Scott has assured us that the 2013 NASPC pipes will be subject to the same standards as all S. E. Thile pipes and will carry the same one-year guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship. "Sandblasted pipes might have sand pits or other small imperfections in them before blasting, which will remove the affected material. The goal is for the result to become an attractive part of the blast overall. Occasionally, a blast will have an extra craggy nature in the affected areas or some other unique character. Some people prefer this type of blast, while others do not. It's difficult to predict. It is extremely important to me that everyone is happy with their S. E. Thile 2013 NASPC pipe. Anyone finding that the pipe they receive is not what they were hoping for, for any reason, is encouraged to contact me to discuss the possibility of an exchange or refund."
